SG 096/26

ASTM introduces updated candle fire safety requirements with the publication of ASTM F2417-26.

In June 2025, ASTM International published ASTM F2417-26, a revised standard specification for candle fire safety. The standard establishes minimum safety requirements for candles and candle ensembles to provide a reasonable degree of safety during normal use, helping to improve consumer safety and reduce fires, deaths and injuries.

What are the key changes in the standard?

  • Added definitions for ‘candle container’ and ‘embed’. Several existing definitions were also revised
  • Expanded the definition of ‘coating’ to distinguish between:
    • Coating on candle container
    • Coating on candle wax
  • Updated Section 4.7 from safety requirements for ‘coating on candles’ to requirements specifically addressing ‘coatings on candle wax’
  • Added new requirements for:
    • Embed flammability
    • Candles containing embeds
    • Candle containers
  • Added Appendix X.5 – Candles containing button cell or coin batteries (applicable only to the US market)

Who is impacted?

The updated standard impacts all stakeholders involved in the design, manufacture, testing, sourcing, importation and retail sale of candle products. Organizations are encouraged to review ASTM F2417-26 as part of their ongoing product safety programs.

When does it apply?

As a voluntary industry standard, ASTM F2417-26 does not have a mandatory effective date. Adoption and implementation timelines are determined by individual organizations.
