Montenegro mandates compliance documentation for food contact ceramics while maintaining existing lead and cadmium limits.
On June 24, 2026, Montenegro published the ‘Regulation on ceramic articles intended to come into contact with food’ (Official Gazette of Montenegro (OGM) No. 87/2026, ‘the Regulation’), replacing the nation’s previous law on food contact ceramics (OGM No. 145/2025, SafeGuardS 9/26).
What does this regulation require?
The key change introduced by the new law is a requirement for manufacturers, importers and retailers to provide, upon request by the competent authorities, documentation demonstrating that food contact ceramic products comply with the applicable lead and cadmium migration limits. This documentation must include laboratory test results and details of the test methods used to verify compliance.
The migration limits for lead and cadmium remain unchanged, as summarized in Table 1.
