ISO Launches New Test Method to Determine Material Loss from Textile End Products During Washing

Introducing both ISO 4484-3, a new standard which addresses the importance of fiber fragmentation measurement, and SGS’s capability to offer a comprehensive range of testing services.

Human activities, such as washing clothes, can generate fiber fragments that are then discharged into waterways. These fragments can flow into rivers and eventually reach the ocean harming the environment and, potentially human health. To address the impacts of fiber fragmentation, international test standards such as ISO 4484-1, AATCC TM 212 and TMC have been developed to determine material loss from fabrics under standardized laundering conditions.

In May 2023, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) launched ISO 4484-3; Microplastics from textile sources — Part 3: Measurement of collected material mass released from textile end products by domestic washing method. It provides a standardized method for the measurement of material mass released from textile end products during washing, when washed in accordance with an ISO 3758 care label, or a country’s own care label system. The fibers shed during washing are collected using a filter bag attached to the outlet hose of the washing machine and weighed. It is hoped that the textile industry can use this information in the future development of clothing, home textiles and other textile products.
