Restoring Thailand’s Coral Reefs
Thailand’s beautiful coral reefs are under threat. Rising sea temperatures associated with climate change are accelerating coral bleaching and leading to increasing storm damage. This could be disastrous not only for the marine ecosystem, but also for the local people who rely on the coral to nurture fish stocks, attract tourists and protect against coastal erosion.
The Royal Thai Marine Corps is tasked with protecting the marine environment. On, June 22, 2019, as part of our ninth annual Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Day, 250 SGS Thailand colleagues supported the marine corps in planting young corals and releasing young nurse sharks to help repopulate the local ecosystem in the area around Teay Ngam, Sattahip, Chonburi. We also collected more than 70 kg of rubbish from the beach.
Mr. Jirote Na Nakorn, Managing Director of SGS Thailand said, "Our volunteering initiatives are focused on continuously undertaking social responsibility activities that give back to society and align with our values and business principles. It was an honor to work alongside the Royal Thai Marine Corps to help with the vital preservation and coral planting work undertaken at Teay Ngam Beach."
In addition to celebrating CSR Day, SGS Thailand participated in other CSR initiatives in 2019. These include constructing and refurbishing classrooms in two schools, one serving children from the mountain community and the other serving children with disabilities. We also helped restore mangrove forests to nurture marine habitats and planted trees to provide clean air and green space for city dwellers. Through our work on these initiatives, SGS Thailand is building stronger teams and enabling our employees to make a meaningful difference to their communities.
