SG 11/24

New Zealand has prohibited the manufacture and use of PFHxS, its salts and PFHxS-related compounds. These became effective in October 2023.

In February 2023, New Zealand consulted over its intention to regulate perfluorohexane sulfonic acid (PFHxS), its salts and PFHxS-related compounds under the nation’s Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act 1996 (the Act, SafeGuardS 32/23).

In September 2023, New Zealand issued an order to revise the Act by placing a blanket ban on the production and use of PFHxS, its salts and PFHxS-related compounds (version of the Act as at October 5, 2023)

According to the amendment, PFHxS, its salts and PFHxS-related compounds have the following meaning:

  • PFHxS (CAS 355-46-4), including branched isomers
  • Its salts
  • Any substance containing the moiety C6F13SO2- as one of its structural elements and with the potential to degrade to PFHxS

Highlights of the amendment are summarized in Table 1
