Brazil Consults Over Proposal to Revise Food Contact Cellulosic Materials and Articles

Brazil has informed the WTO of its intention to revise its legislation on cellulosic materials and articles intended to come into contact with food. Comments are accepted until March 7, 2022

On January 7, 2022, the World Trade Organization (WTO) announced a draft resolution from Brazil’s Health Surveillance Agency (Agência Nacional de Vigilância Sanitária, ANVISA) on its intention to revise the nation’s technical regulation on food contact cellulosic materials and articles under Resolution of the Board of Collegiate of Directors – RDC No. 88, 2016 (Resolução de Diretoria Colegiada - RDC no 88, de 29 de junho de 2016). The draft resolution, attached to WTO document number 22-0190) and notified under G/TBT/N/BRA/1298, requires pigments and dyes in food contact cellulosic materials and articles to conform to BS EN 646 ‘Paper and board intended to come into contact with foodstuffs – Determination of color fastness of dyed paper and board.

Highlights of the draft resolution are summarized in Table 1.
