SGS Latin America Region has championed energy efficiency and wider sustainability initiatives for many years. Many of our affiliates have implemented the Energy Efficiency in Buildings (EEB) program, have raised employee environmental awareness through our Spot the Orange Dot campaign and have achieved significant energy and business efficiencies. Building on these achievements, in 2019 we decided to establish the first Regional EEB Committee.

The purpose of this committee is to provide a framework for communication among affiliates in the Latin America region, so they can identify and replicate energy saving initiatives and share knowledge on environmental topics that are relevant to SGS.

The EEB committee, which meets quarterly, is co-led by Corporate Sustainability and Regional Operational Integrity, and is fully supported by Chief Operating Officer Luis Felipe Elias. The inaugural meeting took place in November 2019, and involved representatives from SGS Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Peru and Mexico. Participants shared sustainability success stories related to the use of natural lighting, the optimization of air conditioners, water saving through the use of control devices and water treatment plants, and the importance of key performance indicators (KPIs).

Adopting a regional approach to energy efficiency will ensure that affiliates across the entire Latin America region benefit from a more coordinated approach to energy efficiency, sharing knowledge and gaining a broader understanding of the measures for achieving energy and business efficiencies that can be implemented in our offices and laboratories. In 2020, affiliates will be able to take advantage of this initiative by taking action on engine efficiency, lighting and other several issues involving our facilities.
