SGS Australia Supports Sustainable Supply Chains

At SGS Australia, we recognize that we can have a positive influence on our large and varied supply chain by supporting responsible, ethical and sustainable businesses. We look for suppliers that practice strong labor standards within their own organizations and their supply chains, have polices of hiring employees and suppliers from local and Indigenous communities, provide environmentally friendly products and support social development initiatives.

We use this approach with all types of procurement, from choosing coffee suppliers with the highest labor standards to requiring laboratory chemical manufacturers to provide traceability on toxic materials.

We challenge our suppliers to help us achieve our sustainability goals in a range of different ways, including:

  • Reducing waste and increasing recycling
    • We buy our office supplies from COS, making use of their reusable plastic tub delivery system to reduce packaging waste
    • Our cleaning company, Pickwick, has agreements in place with its suppliers to ensure chemicals are supplied only in recyclable plastic containers, deliveries are provided in reusable containers and products are environmentally safe. Pickwick also supports SGS in implementing our Reuse, Recycle, Reduce program across all our facilities
    • Cleanaway Waste Management visited our Perth Airport site to give a recycling awareness talk to our employees and install a new suite of recycling bins to make waste segregation easier
    • We require HP to provide a whole-of-life service for toner to ensure a complete supply, collection and recycling chain
  • Reducing carbon emissions associated with our operations
    • Our facilities management provider, BSA, supports our efforts to improve the efficiency of our building systems. The company is accredited to ISO 14001:2015, the environmental management system standard, has National Environmental Balancing Bureau accreditation and is a member of Green Building Council Australia.
    • We are looking at ways to ensure that the supplier of our fleet vehicles helps us to meet our vehicle emissions targets when we renew our contract with them

In 2020, SGS Australia is building upon our successful Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP), transitioning to a more advanced “Innovate RAP” which will involve building closer working relationships with our existing Indigenous business suppliers and engaging with a wider number of potential suppliers in the Indigenous community.
