COP26: Accelerating the Transition to Clean Energy

November 04, 2021

The transition from coal to clean energy will be an important topic at the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) taking place in Glasgow, UK, between October 31 and November 12, 2021.

Power generation accounts for a quarter of all greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. To meet the goals of the Paris Agreement, the world needs to transition from coal to clean energy five times faster than it currently is.

Clean energy should be seen as an opportunity to create a more prosperous world. Solar and wind power are now cheaper than coal in many countries, meaning a transition to clean energy will not only help the environment, but it is also an opportunity for businesses to grow.

Political, financial and technical leaders in the global power sector are already working together in the Energy Transition Council to ensure clean power is the most attractive option. COP26 is also supporting the Powering Past Coal Alliance – a coalition of countries, cities, banks and utility companies committed to phasing out unabated coal power and ending international financing of new coal plants.

The pressure to adopt clean energy and greener ways of operating is not just coming from COP26. Consumers and supply chain partners are now actively looking to collaborate with companies that can demonstrate a dependence on clean energy and GHG emission reductions.

SGS offers auditing services to ISO 14064 GHG Accounting & Verification and ISO 50001 Energy Management Systems (EnMS). ISO 14064 provides organizations of all sizes with a way to quantify, monitor, report and verify GHG emissions. ISO 50001 specifies the requirements for establishing, implementing, maintaining and improving an organization's EnMS. It provides an effective framework for reducing energy use, thereby also reducing energy costs and GHG emissions.

Globally recognized, these standards will demonstrate your commitment to clean energy.
