SGS Gains Approval from Egypt’s NFSA to issue Certificates of Inspection (COI) for Food Exports to Egypt

December 01, 2020

SGS has been approved by Egypt's National Food and Safety Authority (NFSA) to carry out inspections and issue Certificates of Inspection (CoI) for imports of food and food contact materials to the country.

The approval follows publication of the NFSA's Decree no. 2 for 2020, which launched an Optional Conformity Assessment program for imported food consignments to Egypt. Designed to ensure imported foods into Egypt comply with Egyptian Food laws and regulations, it also regulates certification companies approved to inspect and issue conformity certificates.

With effect from December 1, 2020, SGS will partner with Egypt's NFSA to deliver its Product Conformity Assessment (PCA) program. Products within scope initially include milk and dairy, preserved and dried fruits, oils and fats, sugary confectionery, chocolate and cocoa products, natural, mineral and carbonated water, fruit juices and wheat, as well as food contact materials.

Once goods arrive at Egypt's customs, the NFSA will undertake the verification process and only release goods when the results of their assessments are approved.

Abdel Aal ElSayed, SGS Managing Director in Egypt said "We're extremely proud to be amongst the first organizations to support Egypt's NFSA in the delivery of its certification program. We now look forward to working with food manufacturers and importers around the world to verify the compliance of their food products with Egypt's requirements and smooth their path through the customs process."

SGS's new PCA program delivers the following interventions:

  • Initial on-site visual inspection and sampling as per NFSA requirements
  • Testing of samples within SGS's (or SGS's sub-contracted) ISO/IEC 17025 accredited lab
  • Conformity assessment including revision of test reports and quality documents
  • Secondary on-site inspection of loading supervision and container sealing
  • Issue of CoI

Initially, SGS has approval to issue Certificates of Inspection for the following countries and commodities and the list will grow over time.
