Oil Condition Monitoring (OCM)

Avoid equipment failure and ensure the long working life of machinery with oil condition monitoring from SGS.

Proper lubrication is the single most significant contributor to the working life of machinery. Around 75% of all bearing failures are due to lubrication issues, caused by contamination or the wrong lubricant.

Our oil condition monitoring (OCM) services help you to prevent machinery failure. We analyze lubricating oil, greases and hydraulic fluids to provide you with an accurate picture of what is happening inside power generators, gearboxes, compressors, hydraulic systems and other critical machines, as well as vital information on the condition of the oil itself. Our experts can provide tribology analysis to better understand the causes of component failure.

We will assess your lubrication needs and set up a personalized oil analysis program for you, so you can schedule maintenance effectively, minimizing the risk of damage and avoiding unscheduled downtime.

Oil analysis solutions to optimize operations

We combine the expertise of our diagnostic engineers with the latest techniques for analyzing lubricating oils, greases, hydraulic fluids and transformer oils, enabling you to:

  • Maximize asset uptime and extend asset life
  • Reduce maintenance and lubricant costs by optimizing service intervals
  • Minimize waste through efficient fluid use and reduced oil disposal
  • Protect equipment warranties with documented oil health data
  • Avoid major capital expenditures by preventing failures
  • Improve profitability through operational efficiency

Our services

Our advanced oil analysis keeps your engines, gearboxes, turbines and hydraulic systems running at peak performance. We test lubricants and hydraulic fluids to ASTM, ISO and other industry standards, covering:

  • Viscosity and oil condition
  • Wear metals and particle contamination
  • Water, fuel and glycol intrusion
  • Oxidation, nitration and sulfation trends
  • TAN/TBN balance and additive depletion

In addition, we offer a wide range of specialized tests tailored to specific applications and operational challenges. With our sampling kits and our global network of accredited laboratories, you receive fast, reliable results supported by expert diagnostics. Results are available anytime through our secure digital portals and mobile apps, making it easy to track trends, plan maintenance and share insights across your teams.

Our comprehensive grease analysis lets you stay on top of mission critical grease conditions, degradation trends and wear rates. We perform grease tests to ASTM and other industry protocols. We offer:

  • Wear particle analysis
  • Oil and filler identification
  • Emission spectroscopy
  • Remaining useful life evaluation routine (RULER)
  • Property analysis test
  • Compatibility and performance testing
  • Base oil analysis, soap type classification and unworked cone penetration

We can screen your grease samples at our laboratory and provide you with Grease Thief© pre-packed sample kits for easy, accurate and efficient onsite sampling. Grease Thief conforms to ASTM D7718 for grease sampling. Our testing method is based on ASTM D7918.

Grease analysis is not only key for maintenance optimization – in the UK and EU, regular used grease testing also forms part of health and safety guidelines, particularly in offshore and high-risk environments, where documentation of such analysis is often required.

Transformer oil plays a critical role in the cooling and insulation of transformers. Electrical and thermal stress, moisture or chemical contamination can lead to premature failures and reduced equipment life. Our transformer oil testing service offers a complete solution, delivering rapid analysis in accordance with IEC, ASTM and ISO standards, to help you detect emerging issues early.

Through our SOFIA web portal, you gain 24/7 access to your test results, including historical trends of key gases and rates of gas generation – empowering proactive maintenance decisions.

We will help you:

  • Determine the basic electrical properties of transformer oil
  • Identify if an oil is suitable for further use
  • Detect whether filtration or regeneration is needed
  • Enhance component life and reduce oil costs
  • Maximize safety and prevent untimely failures

Our comprehensive diesel fuel quality testing services support refiners, traders, distributors, fleet operators and industrial clients in meeting performance expectations and regulatory requirements. We help ensure compliance, monitor quality and troubleshoot issues related to biodiesel blending, trace metals, sulfur compounds and fuel degradation.

We analyze ultra-low sulfur diesel (ULSD), biodiesel blends and other distillate fuels according to ASTM D975 and globally recognized standards. Our services include:

  • Diesel fuel sampling and onsite collection
  • Bulk cargo trade inspection and blending verification
  • In depth laboratory analysis
  • Cargo additive treatments for quality restoration

Our laboratories operate 24/7 in key refining and distribution hubs around the world, testing fuels for both on-road and off-road applications.

Linking diesel quality to equipment performance

Diesel quality directly impacts the performance and reliability of generators, turbines, marine engines, mining fleets and heavy machinery. Contaminated or degraded fuel can cause injector wear, filter clogging and combustion issues. By integrating diesel testing with oil condition monitoring (OCM), we help you detect root causes of wear, prevent downtime and extend equipment life through smarter maintenance strategies.

An estimated 40% of engines fail because their cooling systems have not been maintained properly. Often this is simply due to neglect. Our coolant testing and analysis services quickly and accurately identify potential issues before they can lead to serious harm. We will let you know if your coolant is fit for purpose or requires changing and identify contamination, abnormalities, and cooling system or engine failures.

Analysis of your coolant sample includes:

  • Visual appearance
  • Freeze point
  • Particulates
  • Metal content
  • pH
  • Glycol

What is the OCM process?

  1. Take your sample and ship it to our lab – we provide sample bottles, labels and pre-addressed envelopes, with optional prepaid postage and customer branding.

  2. Once your sample is received, we enter it into our SOFIA LIMS.

  3. We perform the analysis, in accordance with quality standards. We will inform you immediately of any alert situation by phone, so you can take immediate action.

  4. Our experienced mechanical engineers make a diagnosis.

  5. Your report is emailed to you, normally two days after we have received the sample. It is also published on SOFIA Web and the SOFIA app.
