Around 3,000 lives are lost on Kenya’s roads annually, placing it among the 10 countries in the world with the highest number of road fatalities. According to Kenya’s National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), 91% of road accidents are human-induced, caused by speeding, reckless driving, dangerous overtaking and drunk driving, among other issues.

SGS’s transportation services support governments, manufacturers, traders, financial institutions and insurance companies in meeting the highest levels of transport safety and reliability. Alongside these services, which include comprehensive checks on drivers, vehicles and safety processes, we ensure that our own drivers uphold the highest standards of driver safety. For example, in 2017, SGS Kenya’s transportation team collaborated with our operational integrity team to develop behavior-based safety training to improve driver skills. This training supplements the practical driving test that all new drivers must take as part of our recruitment process.

The training evaluates drivers on their knowledge of safe driving techniques, such as safe stopping distances, as well as their understanding of passenger safety and awareness of other road users. Assessments are followed by a debriefing session to ensure that prospective drivers understand necessary safe driving techniques and can implement them in practice.
