Bahrain Islamic Bank Becomes the First ISO 22301:2019 Certified Organization in Bahrain Through SGS

August 10, 2020

SGS has awarded Bahrain Islamic Bank (BisB) the first ever ISO 22301:2019 certificate in Bahrain in recognition of the organization’s business continuity management system and the bank’s efforts to address potential risks or disruptions, and its commitment to adhere to best practices in this field.

“This achievement of obtaining the ISO 22301:2019 certification reiterates our commitment to the continuous development of our information security systems with the aim of protecting against, preparing for, responding to and reducing the possibility of occurring and recovering from any emergencies if they arise. We consider the development of our business continuity management system a top priority in order to be able to quickly overcome any emergency that may arise at any given time, the COVID-19 outbreak notwithstanding, in order to maintain the health and continuity of our business while ensuring a seamless delivery of products and services,” said the Chief Executive Officer of BisB, Mr. Hassan Jarrar.

ISO 22301 is the international standard for Business Continuity Management Systems (BCMS) which establishes a framework for building business resilience capabilities to effectively respond to unexpected business disruptions, ensuring safeguards are in place to protect the interests of key stakeholders, as well as an organization’s reputation, brand and value. The international standard’s latest version published in 2019 enables an organization to cope with a situation arising from unplanned IT and telecom outages, data breaches involving the loss or theft of confidential information, cyber-attacks using malware, denial of service, adverse weather (windstorms, tornadoes, flooding, snow or drought) and interruption of utility supplies such as water, gas, electricity or waste disposal.

Establishing an effective and comprehensive BCMS based on the principles of ISO 22301, is essential for producing a Business Impact Analysis (BIA) that aids identification of critical activities, co-dependence areas and resources needed to support key products and services. An established BCMS enables you to know the impact of failure in any of these areas and allows you to plan strategic and tactical steps to prepare for the worst-case scenario.

Roy Skaria, Managing Director for SGS Saudi Arabia & Bahrain, said: “In order to comply with the ISO 22301 standard requirements, a management system must demonstrate its leadership commitment and ability to implement preventive measures to address external threats and vulnerabilities that can interrupt any business. Acquiring the ISO 22301 certificate during these unprecedented times is a true testament that a management system can withstand the challenges of a pandemic era. We at SGS congratulate BisB for this remarkable achievement.”
