Prevention of Occupational Diseases in an Effort to Implement an Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems (OHSMS)

From the previous article, the author directs to be able to recognize Occupational Diseases with the aim that organizations can know Occupational Diseases can take appropriate actions and K3 programs in following up on hazards that exist in the organization so that there is no Occupational Disease which aims to increase employee productivity so that the further impact can implement an Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems (OHSMS) in the organization will be better, So that the company's target will be achieved optimally. For this reason, this article the author wants to convey efforts to prevent Occupational Diseases that can be used as a reference by organizations.

The HSE team must always be aware of the potential for Occupational Diseases, such vigilance can be:

  1. Carry out prevention against the onset of disease.
  2. Conduct early detection of health problems.
  3. Protecting the workforce by following the labor social security program

Knowing the state of work and its condition can be one of the preventions against Occupational Diseases. Some tips in preventing Occupational Diseases, including:

  1. Ensure the commitment of the company's leadership is carried out by all employees.
  2. Recognize occupational risks by identifying them in HIRADC.
  3. Take precautions based on the provisions of laws and regulations and other requirements, so that there is no potential for diseases that will arise in the workplace.
  4. Apply the K3 program consistently.
  5. Make sure each personnel has the required competencies and knows their duties and responsibilities to prevent Occupational Diseases
  6. Control based on the order in the risk control hierarchy (elimination, substitution, engineering control, administrative control and wear PPE correctly and regularly)
  7. Immediately access a health place and consult with a company doctor if there is potential Occupational Diseases at the work site and make corrections to non-conformities that occur to prevent Occupational Diseases from arising.

In addition, there are also several other precautions that can be taken so that work is not a land for reaping disease, including:

Primary Prevention – Health Promotion

  • Health Behaviors
  • Hazard factors at work
  • Good work behavior
  • Sport
  • Balanced nutrition

Secondary Prevention – Specific Protection

  • Control by law
  • Administrative/organizational control: rotation/limitation of working hours
  • Technical control: substitution, isolation, ventilation, personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Control of health pathways: immunization, health consultation.

Tertiary Prevention - Early Diagnosis and Prompt Treatment

  • Pre-employment health check
  • Periodic health checks
  • Surveillants
  • Periodic environmental checks
  • Immediate treatment if interference is found in workers.
  • Immediate control at work
