Accident prevention is an integrated program with a number of coordinated activities based on knowledge, attitudes and abilities, which aims to control hazardous actions and conditions (Heinrich, 1980).
Prevention of such accidents can be both a direct and indirect approach. The hands-on approach includes control over personal and environmental performance. Meanwhile, indirect approaches are long-term, such as work instruction, as well as worker education and training.
The accident prevention that Heinrich expressed emphasizes on things that can affect the attitude of workers. The construction of accident records plays a very important role in eliminating the causes of accidents. If this is done, it is expected to have a beneficial effect on the behavior of workers. The existence of accident recording can help in obtaining information about dangerous actions and personal factors that play a role as the cause of the accident, so that corrective actions related to worker behavior can be taken to realize safe behavior during work.
In ISO 45001:2018, it has directed in the application of its clauses to prevent accidents and illnesses, there are mainly several clauses aimed at preventing accidents such as: making hazard identification and risk assessment (clause 6.1.2), ensuring the identification and evaluation of laws and regulations and other requirements are met (clauses 6.1.3 and 9.1.2), ensuring the competence and concern of employees (clauses 7.2 & 7.3), and other clauses including applying it in operational control (call 8). Several ways that can be used to improve work safety within the industrial sector (International Labour Office, 1989), among others:
- Compliance with regulations related to occupational safety, such as supervision, obligations of employers and workers, first aid training and health checks.
- Standardization, whether official, semi-official, or unofficial, for example regarding individual security equipment.
- Enforcement efforts that must be obeyed in the form of supervision.
- Conduct technical research related to the company's activities to minimize existing hazards.
- Conduct medical research to determine the functional and pathological impacts of environmental, physical and technological factors that can cause accidents in the workplace.
- Conduct psychological research to find out the psychological patterns that cause accidents.
- Conduct statistical research to determine the type of accident that occurs, the frequency of accidents, the workers involved, and the causes of accidents.
- Conduct education and training on occupational safety for workers, especially for new workers.
- Application of various methods of persuasion to increase worker awareness regarding safety in the workplace.
- Insurance by providing funds to improve accident prevention efforts.
- Security measures carried out by each worker.
By making efforts to prevent accidents, it is hoped that the company's operations will not be disrupted and this is to ensure that the company's image in the eyes of customers will be better.
