The eighth edition of IEC 60079-0 has been published, introducing a range of changes from the 2018 edition. Most of these changes are minor and will have little impact on existing certified products. However, a number of significant differences apply, and manufacturers of Ex equipment should understand how they affect their products and existing certification.
We can review the impact of the new edition on your equipment and support the updating of your IECEx and ATEX/UKEX certificates.
Marking and documentation requirements
- Marking of the ambient temperature is always required, even when the range is -20°C to +40°C
- The temperature range of an Ex component must now be included in the schedule of limitations
- Clarification is provided on the marking of the IP rating
- New requirements apply to alternative marking of Ex equipment and Ex components using digital technology
Non-metallic materials and electrostatics
- A new section requires the specification of other non-metallic materials
- Requirements are introduced for electrostatic bonding of dissipative non-metallic enclosures
- Additional specification is required for dissipative shielding
- Surface resistance testing requirements for non-metallic materials have been modified
- Requirements for external conductive parts and the associated transferred charge test have been clarified
Rotating machines and motors
- Temperature sensors and shutdown are required on rotating machines using auxiliary cooling fans
- Additional requirements apply to the instructions for converter driven type ‘e’ motors
- Requirements for motors tested with a converter have been modified
Enclosures, wiring and connections
- A new section covers factory wiring between enclosures
- Additional requirements apply to maintaining the IP rating of plugs and sockets
- Test requirements for cable glands with a seal with multiple openings have been modified
Cells and batteries
- Sodium nickel chloride has been added to the permitted types of secondary cells
