Fimko Oy’s roots go back to 1924, when its operations began as part of official activities overseeing electrical safety in Finland. Over the decades, Fimko developed into a significant player in the testing and certification industry, particularly in the safety and compliance of electrical devices. In 2000, Fimko Oy became part of SGS – the world’s leading testing, inspection, and certification company. This acquisition marked an important turning point in the history of electrical safety and product certification in Finland.
Even before the acquisition, Fimko had established itself as an internationally respected testing and certification body. Its certificates and test reports were widely accepted across Europe and globally. The FI mark granted by Fimko indicated independently tested safety – especially for electrical devices suited to Finnish conditions. Joining SGS brought new opportunities. International networks and investments, such as in the development of EMC and radio testing, further strengthened the company’s position. SGS Fimko tested equipment across various industries – from household appliances to industrial machinery, and from IT to gas devices.
For the parent company, the acquisition was not the largest, but on the Finnish scale, it was significant. The change raised concerns, particularly about jobs moving abroad, but Fimko’s expertise remained in Finland. Certification tasks were not outsourced; instead, SGS laboratories worldwide were quickly integrated into Fimko’s systems. SGS Fimko trained laboratory personnel internationally, spreading Finnish expertise from Hong Kong to Munich.
Fimko’s business idea – to be the best in both testing and certification – remained strong. At the time of the acquisition, exports already accounted for 39% of revenue. With SGS’s support, Fimko grew into an influencer on the international market far beyond its size.
On January 1, 2025, SGS Fimko Oy merged with SGS Finland Oy, consolidating all SGS operations in Finland under one company. The business continued under the name SGS Fimko Oy. The goal of the merger was to streamline operations and strengthen SGS’s position in Finland.
