World’s First VESA DisplayHDR™ True Black 1400 Certification Awarded to Lenovo

09. Oct 2026

Lenovo has become the world’s first manufacturer to achieve VESA DisplayHDR™ True Black 1400 certification for its Yoga Pro 9 16IPH11 (3200 × 2000 configuration), following verification conducted by Granite River Labs (GRL), an SGS company, at its Shanghai laboratory.

The certification marks a significant milestone for the display industry, introducing a new benchmark for high dynamic range (HDR) performance in OLED laptops while reinforcing digital trust through independent verification against recognized industry specifications. By providing objective assessment and certification against established requirements, we help manufacturers demonstrate product performance with confidence and strengthen trust in consumer electronics.

Developed by the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA), the DisplayHDR Compliance Program establishes standardized testing specifications for HDR display performance. For emissive display technologies such as OLED, VESA developed the DisplayHDR True Black series. DisplayHDR True Black 1400 is the newest and most demanding level in the series, designed to recognize displays that deliver exceptional contrast, brightness and image fidelity.

Compared with standard DisplayHDR specifications, the True Black standard sets more stringent performance requirements. It requires displays to achieve an ultra-low black level of 0.0005 cd/m² while reaching peak luminance of up to 1400 cd/m² in specified areas. This combination enables deeper blacks, brighter highlights and more realistic image detail across HDR content.

As a VESA-authorized test center (ATC), we conducted comprehensive technical verification in accordance with certification requirements. Key areas of evaluation included:

  • Luminance and black level: verifying the display’s ability to deliver both extremely bright highlights and deep blacks, helping ensure strong contrast and visual detail
  • Color gamut: assessing support for wide color gamuts, such as DCI-P3, and evaluating color reproduction accuracy in HDR mode
  • Rise time: evaluating pixel response performance during bright-to-dark transitions to help ensure image clarity in fast-moving scenes
  • Bit depth and EOTF: verifying bit-depth performance and HDR electro-optical transfer function (EOTF) tracking capabilities to ensure smooth color gradation and accurate brightness representation

Leveraging our VESA-authorized DisplayHDR certification capabilities, we supported Lenovo throughout the assessment and verification process for the new DisplayHDR True Black 1400 standard. Testing confirmed that the Yoga Pro 9 16IPH11 (3200 × 2000 configuration) met all requirements, making it the first device in the world certified to the new performance tier and establishing a new benchmark for HDR performance in premium consumer devices.

Panta Sun, General Manager, China, GRL: “We are proud to support Lenovo in achieving the world’s first DisplayHDR True Black 1400 certification. This milestone highlights the value of independent verification in helping manufacturers validate advanced display performance claims while providing consumers with greater confidence in the products they choose."

As the highest tier within the DisplayHDR True Black series, the certification recognizes excellence across key performance indicators including peak luminance, black-level performance, color reproduction and HDR representation. Through independent verification against established requirements, it provides an industry-recognized standard for HDR display evaluation.
