SG 074.22

Now available in the library of CEN for standardization bodies in Europe, amendment A1 to standard EN1888-1 on pushchairs and prams should be published by all member states by October 2022, at the latest.

Amendment A1 to standard EN1888-1: 2018 on pushchairs and prams intended for children up to a weight of 15 kg was published in April 2022 and a consolidated version of the standard is now available.

Amendment A1 has been prepared by CEN experts to correct some technical mistakes and improve/clarify some requirements and tests in EN1888-1, published in December 2018.

  • Some definitions have been reviewed and improved, as well as the determination of the occupant space
  • The wording in clause 8.3.5.1.1.3 related to locking mechanisms has been adjusted, and a note added to specify that removal of the child is not considered as an operating action. The principle of the requirement has not been altered, but this new wording ensures it is applied properly
  • Clause 8.10.3.2 describing the irregular surface test has been completed with details on the adjustment of any adjustable or reversible handles, and orientation of reversible seat units
  • Errors in the pictogram in clause 10 on product information, and in the table of translation of warning sentences have been corrected

Some changes introduced by this amendment will influence product conformity:

  • Clause 6 – chemical hazards, has been amended to apply the latest version of EN71-3
  • The whole of clause 8.4 has been reworded to address, in a proper way, hazards from loops. Free lengths and loops of the restraint system, bags, and carrying handles, are excluded from the requirement; and the dimensions of loops are assessed by using a small head probe
  • In clause 8.5.2.3, the application of the bite test has been modified to ensure reproducibility and harmonization of practices
  • Finally, the requirement in clause 8.9.5 – stability hazards due to the position of swiveling wheels, has been deleted, as no suitable test method could be developed to assess it adequately
  • In accordance with European National Standard organizations bound to CEN/CENELEC rules, conflicting national standards have to be withdrawn in October 2022.
