SGS International Services Laboratory Marks Two-Year Anniversary

June 26, 2023

We are thrilled to celebrate two years since International Services Laboratory (ISL) in Ringaskiddy, Cork, Ireland, became part of the SGS network.

Two years on from the acquisition, SGS ISL's team continues to evolve its GMP analytical testing services to support both the vibrant local manufacturing industry and global players.

SGS ISL is part of the SGS Health Science global network, now consisting of over 27 GMP/GLP facilities worldwide, supporting pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical manufacturing offering a wide range of services and expertise in contract testing, from early-stage development to commercial release, formulation development & manufacture as well as clinical research.

GMP Contract Testing Laboratory in Ireland

SGS ISL forms part of an important biotechnology and pharmaceutical hub. Not only does the laboratory support manufacturing operations across Ireland, but it also draws on its long history to support global pharmaceutical operations and worldwide supply chains. Our team looks forward to celebrating its 25-year anniversary later this year.

The laboratory boasts a 4,900 m2 footprint and employs over 100 technical experts, in technologies including XRPD, GC-MS/MS and XRF. Acquired from Novartis two years ago, we have supported SGS ISL as it continues to expand these capabilities and becomes a core part of our global testing and analytical services.

Since the acquisition, the facility has successfully been inspected by the HPRA and migrated onto the same global LIMS and QMS platforms used by the SGS network. This enables it to provide seamless access to the industry's most comprehensive range of analytical services.

Similarly, we have invested in renewed equipment, including ICP-OES, Ion Chromatography, UV and Coulometry systems, and expanded facilities for raw materials and stability.

SGS ISL has built its reputation as an important cog in the Irish pharmaceutical ecosystem, supporting global clients in their commercialization programs and as they prepare their products for EU release. We continue to grow our customer base, employing talented technical staff from across the region and giving them valuable experience on our clients' sites.

Yvonne Dunne, Head of Health Science for SGS in Ireland said: "The pharma and biopharma sector in Ireland is booming, in part thanks to several significant investments by global companies in recent years. Ireland has always played a strategic role in linking the USA and the UK with Europe, and SGS in Cork has successfully leveraged its capabilities to support those needs.

“We see analytical testing being more strategically outsourced globally and Ireland is leading that trend in many areas because of the density of manufacturing operations. The need for insourced SGS technical staff working on our clients' sites is also an important part of how we work. This also gives our employees the opportunity to access a diverse range of experience and develop professionally.

“We look forward to continuing to invest in analytical technology at SGS ISL, and the professional development of our technicians, as we grow our ability to support local and global customers."

SGS CEO visit

On May 12, 2023, SGS CEO, Frankie Ng, visited SGS ISL, as part of a tour of our premier testing and analytical facilities. Frankie met with the SGS ISL team and we aligned on an exciting future strategy for SGS ISL. The visit was commemorated with a presentation of a camán and sliotar (hurley and ball), which are used in Ireland’s national sport, hurling.
