SGS Role in Biodiversity Conservation for a Green Planet in Saudi Arabia

February 02, 2026

At first light, the desert air was still cool. As I stepped across the sandy terrain of a project site in northern Saudi Arabia, a lone Arabian Red Fox appeared briefly on the horizon-silent, aware and perfectly camouflaged to the sandy landscape

Moments like this remind me that every ecological project we undertake at SGS has a deeper purpose: ensuring development progresses without losing the critical threads of biodiversity that hold our planet together.

This is the heart of my work as an ecologist at SGS. Every field survey, every mammal recorded; every bird photographed tells a bigger story of balance, responsibility and a shared mission of building a greener and more sustainable future for the upcoming generations.

Connecting field reality with corporate responsibility

As part of SGS’s commitment, the 2030 vision of the Kingdom, focusing on the reducing carbon emission, enhancing green spaces and protecting biodiversity, we conduct wildlife assessments, habitat evaluations and ecological risk analyses for some of the region’s most ambitious infrastructure and development projects.

But our role goes beyond compliance.

We deliver ecological insights into strategic, scientific solutions that help clients meet global sustainability standards, reduce environmental risks and protect natural heritage.

For corporate partners, this means smoother approvals, fewer regulatory obstacles and a positive contribution to conservation.

Stories from the field: Where ecology guides development

1. Wildlife hazard monitoring on airports

During an early-morning inspection at an airport facility, flocks of Rock Doves (Columba livia) circled low over maintenance buildings while a mammal footprint was recorded near the perimeter fence.
Such observations are not random signs, but they signal potential safety risks.

Our wildlife hazard monitoring program helps aviation clients reduce bird strikes, monitor risk factors and design safer airside operations and align with international standards. Through behavioral mapping and risk analysis, SGS supports airports in protecting both wildlife and human life.

2. Ecological baseline surveys for sustainable infrastructure

At another project site, camera traps recorded nocturnal movement of desert mammals, while migratory bird species rested around water sources. We identified a couple of roosting sites of migratory birds and plotted a map for threatened birds for an easy and safer process for the development of new infrastructures. Further, these data points allow us to identify sensitive habitats zone and guide developers to plan responsibly avoiding high-impact zones and integrating biodiversity considerations into their designs.

3. Why biodiversity matters to business

In today’s world, biodiversity conservation is no longer just a scientific concern; it is a corporate priority and responsibility linked to reputation, risk reduction and long-term sustainability.

By understanding wildlife presence and ecosystem dynamics, organizations can:

  • Prevent costly project delays caused by non-compliance
  • Strengthen Environment and sustainability reporting
  • Reduce operational risks (e.g., bird strikes, wildlife encroachment)
  • Contribute to national conservation goals

SGS empowers businesses with scientific intelligence to operate responsibly without compromising environmental integrity.

How we lead the way in ecological excellence

Our environmental inspection services combine field expertise with advanced scientific technologies, including:

  • Infrastructure based flora & fauna inventory
  • Camera trapping, wildlife hazard monitoring and wildlife telemetry
  • GIS-based ecological modelling
  • Internationally aligned ecological assessment protocols
  • Professionally qualified ecological and environmental teams

This blend of science, technology and corporate understanding ensures clients receive accurate, actionable and globally benchmarked environmental solutions.

A shared mission for a greener planet

Every record of animal track, every record of bird call, every habitat mapped is part of a larger story, where development and nature can coexist and it can lead us to a secure and balanced future.

At SGS, we believe biodiversity conservation is not just environmental work; it is an investment to secure the future. With every project, we help organizations take responsible steps towards a greener, safer and sustainable planet.
