We are proud to have delivered New Zealand’s first-ever plastic waste verification and validation project to the Plastic Pollution Reduction Standard (PPRS).
Plastic waste industrial adhesive startup NILO is on a mission to transform plastic waste from a global problem into a valuable resource. Its patented binder technology converts soft plastic waste into a cleaner, scalable solution for the global composite wood panel industry.
We have verified and validated Aotearoa-based NILO according to the Plastic Pollution Reduction Standard (PPRS), the first-ever Plastic Credits in New Zealand.
Plastic waste and pollution remain significant global challenges. Despite growing awareness, experts estimate that less than 10% is recycled globally. Each year, increasing volumes are incinerated, landfilled or leaked into the environment, creating major impacts on ecosystems, economies and society, including human health and climate change.
As part of its commercialization, scaling from an R&D facility to New Zealand’s largest plastic-waste processing operation, NILO engaged us to verify its compliance with the PCX PPRS. This verification demonstrates that NILO’s process prevents plastics from harming the environment, supports a circular economy and enables the generation of plastic avoidance credits that provide essential revenue. It also helps ensure NILO’s innovative adhesive product is a viable alternative to the increasingly regulated urea formaldehyde.

Alexandra Fabbro, Head of Group Sustainability and Circularity Services, said: “We are proud to support NILO through our independent PPRS validation and verification solutions. It is inspiring to see how these services empower them to claim plastic credits, expand their impact and take decisive action to prevent plastic waste from harming the environment – driving meaningful progress toward a circular economy.”
PCX Solutions, a non-profit organization, was the first in the world to establish a fully transparent, third-party audited Plastic Pollution Reduction Standard (PPRS). The standard ensures the integrity and impact of post-consumer plastic waste recovery and diversion projects, while enabling solutions to scale through revenue generated from plastic-avoidance credits.
The standard, with its strict end-to-end impact verification process, aims to stop escalating plastic pollution by ensuring a safe and transparent system for collecting, transporting and processing plastic waste, preventing it from harming the environment while supporting a circular economy.
As we are an internationally recognized leader in sustainability assurance, and a PCX-accredited verification and validation body, NILO’s team saw the value in partnering with us. Our proven global expertise in delivering sustainability solutions through our IMPACT NOW for sustainability framework provides NILO a long-term partner that can support compliance with the standard globally, share valuable insights on circular-economy best practices and advance the shared mission to create long-term value for society, reduce waste and emissions, and build a more sustainable future.
Our experts, Ursula Antunez and Dr Kushil Perera, supported NILO through the robust accountability framework, conducting verification activities remotely and on-site in Auckland.
About NILO
NILO is a New Zealand-based startup that has developed and patented a process to convert non-recyclable plastic waste into industrial adhesives for wood-based products like particleboard OSB, MDF. Its vision for developing this technology was driven by a move to eliminate waste, reduce the carbon footprint of traditional adhesives and create a more circular economy for plastics.
This revolutionary technology has attracted many global retailers who have embedded sustainability in their company’s ethos, including Inter IKEA who acquired a 12.5% stake in an Auckland company.
Andrew McIntosh of Inter IKEA and now a director on NILO’s board, commented: “NILO’s approach to the creation of this adhesive shows real potential, and we are hopeful the collaboration will be mutually beneficial. Ikea is committed to our strategy of being people and planet positive. The investment in NILO shows our commitment to working with innovative startups that can support and help accelerate the IKEA material innovation agenda.”
