ASTM publishes a reapproved safety standard specification for adult jewelry, designated ASTM F2999-19 (Reapproved 2026).
ASTM International issued ASTM F2999-19 (Reapproved 2026), ‘Standard Consumer Safety Specification for Adult Jewelry' in May 2026.
What does this adult jewelry standard require?
Key highlights in the reapproved standard include:
- Specifying lead content limits for accessible component materials, unless an exemption applies
- Establishing a list of acceptable materials for the manufacture of body-piercing jewelry
- Authorizing the use of several metals in paint and surface coating materials, subject to migration limits
- Requiring accessible metal or plastic/polymeric components to comply with cadmium content limits
- Indicating the use of European Standards (EN) for nickel release in metal components
- Stipulating that liquid-filled products must be made with materials that are exempt from labeling requirements specified in 16 CFR 1500.14, ‘Products requiring special labeling under section 3(b) of the act’
- Specifying several mechanical requirements, including warning statements for suction tongue studs or jewelry products that contain hazardous magnets and/or batteries

This standard affects stakeholders across the adult jewelry supply chain, including manufacturers, importers, distributors and retailers operating in the United States.
When does it apply?
ASTM F2999-19 (Reapproved 2026) applies from May 12, 2026.
It is also important to note that certain metals in adult jewelry are regulated in California and Minnesota. (SafeGuardS 141/19 and 100/25).
