As Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT) becomes the standard for critical weld inspections, quality and reliability shouldn’t rest solely with inspection service providers. End users and EPCs must be PAUT literate to ensure inspections are planned, executed and evaluated correctly.
In October to November 2025, SGS delivered three PAUT programs for enduser teams and EPC QA/QC professionals, empowering over 60 participants to ask the right questions, define clear requirements and confidently evaluate outcomes. User teams and EPC QA/QC professionals, empowering over 60 participants to ask the right questions, define clear requirements, and confidently evaluate outcomes.
Key focus areas
- Pre-inspection and in process checks for PAUT inspection and inprocess checks for PAUT
- Client & EPC requirements: procedures, qualifications and personnel competency
- Scan plan reviews to assure coverage and defect ability plan reviews
- Live demos: probe selection, focal laws and data acquisition
- Data analysis and interpretation: acceptance criteria, defect characterization, reporting
- Recognizing limitations and risks when PAUT is misapplied
The impact
- End users: Enhanced ability to verify inspection integrity, challenge ambiguous results and make informed fitness for service (FFS) decisions. Following the training, the disparity between client inspection requirements and NDT execution was significantly reduced. This improvement facilitated more efficient ongoing inspections and created additional opportunities for proper PAUT implementation in fitness-for-service (FFS) decision-making.
- EPCs: Tighter control of fabrication/construction quality – reducing rework, delays and long-term integrity risks. term integrity risks
Our approach at SGS
Our philosophy is simple: share knowledge, build capability and trust and help clients understand the impact of the right inspection implementation. We engage as partners – so PAUT becomes more than a compliance checkbox; it’s a reliable inspection solution that safeguards asset integrity.
PAUT delivers real value only when planning, execution and evaluation are aligned. Our goal is to equip clients with the knowledge to ensure inspections are implemented correctly and deliver reliable results.
