SGS is Speaking at Carbon Literacy for Travel and Tourism Event

June 24, 2024

SGS is thrilled to speak at the Carbon Literacy for Travel and Tourism event, which ABTA (The Travel Association) organized. The event is scheduled for June 26, 2024, and will be held at ABTA's offices in London.

The Carbon Literacy Scheme accredits the one-day seminar. It will provide an overview and guide to the definitions and goals surrounding carbon and climate change tailored to the travel and tourism industry. Each delegate who attends and passes the assessment at the end will receive accreditation.

Our esteemed speaker, Laura Berns, Climate Change Programme Lead Auditor, will be delivering an Introduction to Climate Change. With her extensive knowledge of the basic science, the current landscape, and the scientific consensus, she is the perfect person to guide you through this crucial topic.

Laura has an MSc in Climate Change Science and Policy from the University of Bristol and is an experienced Lead Auditor within the SGS Climate Change Program. She has significant experience in assessing client operations within the regulated and voluntary markets. Laura has worked in a wide range of industries and within a spectrum of standards and schemes, including the GHG Protocol, ISO 14064, PAS 2060, and leading frameworks such as Net Zero pathways.

Carbon literacy is important for the travel and tourism industry because it equips stakeholders with the knowledge and understanding to reduce carbon footprints, promote sustainable practices, and mitigate climate change impacts. As tourism significantly contributes to global carbon emissions, fostering carbon literacy helps businesses and travellers make informed decisions that support environmental preservation, enhance destination sustainability, and meet growing consumer demand for eco-friendly options. This, in turn, ensures the long-term viability of the industry while protecting natural resources and promoting responsible travel practices.

This conference is not just a commitment to sustainability, but a direct response to the pressing need for carbon literacy within the travel and tourism sector. By attending, you are not only advancing your own knowledge, but also contributing to the collective effort towards a more sustainable future.
