SGS update to UKCA marking regulations

September 01, 2023

The government intends to extend recognition of the CE marking for placing most goods on the market in Great Britain, indefinitely, beyond December 2024.

These updates apply to the 18 regulations that fall under the Department for Business and Trade (DBT).

These are:

  • Toys
  • Pyrotechnics
  • Recreational craft and personal watercraft
  • Electromagnetic compatibility
  • Non-automatic weighing instruments
  • Measuring instruments
  • Measuring container bottles
  • Lifts
  • Equipment for potentially explosive atmospheres (UKEX)
  • Radio equipment
  • Pressure equipment
  • Simple pressure vessels
  • Personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Gas appliances
  • Machinery
  • Equipment for use outdoors
  • Aerosols
  • Low voltage electrical equipment

Manufactured goods that are being placed on the market in Great Britain, and that are currently subject to the European Union CE marking, can continue to be placed on the UK market with CE marking indefinitely.

To clarify, there is now no defined date when CE marking will not be accepted in the UK and there is no defined date when UKCA marking will be required.

At a recent gathering of the UK Approved Bodies Group for UKEX, officials from the relevant government department confirmed that while there is an ongoing proposition to modify the marking stipulation, there exists no immediate intention to eliminate other associated prerequisites concerning this equipment. This encompasses the requirements for importers, indicating that imports from EU member states would still necessitate a designated UK importer. Additionally, the stipulations for UK Declarations of Conformity referencing UK Designated Standards remain unchanged.
