India Proposes to Mandate Standards for Several Categories of Food Contact Products

India has informed the WTO of its intention to mandate the use of national standards for several categories of food contact products.  If approved, the new law will become effective six months after the date of publication in the Official Gazette

On May 5, 2023, the World Trade Organization (WTO) announced a draft order from the India Ministry of Commerce and Industry’s Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade on its intention to mandate five standards for five categories of food contact product.

According to the draft order, goods are required to conform to the specified Indian Standards and bear the Standard Mark under a license from the Bureau as Scheme-I of Schedule II of the Bureau of Indian Standards (Conformity Assessment) Regulations 2018.

Highlights of the draft Order are summarized in Table 1.
