Supporting the PFAS Transition in Automotive Supply Chains

Jun 11, 2026

Around the world, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are increasingly subject to stringent legislative controls. Within the automotive industry, PFAS and fluoropolymers are widely used due to their exceptional stain- and heat-resistance, as well as their non-stick properties. These characteristics make them integral in a broad range of applications, including seals, tires, lubricants and refrigerants. Moreover, the development and deployment of future mobility technologies has relied heavily on PFAS in critical components such as fuel cells, power electronics, traction batteries and advanced technical textiles and membranes.

Global PFAS restrictions in transition

Global regulatory developments are already impacting original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and their supply chains. In the European Union, a proposed revision to REACH would introduce a near‑total ban on PFAS. In the United States, manufacturers must prepare mandatory submissions ahead of the Environmental Protection Agency’s 2026 reporting deadline. In China, while there is no automotive‑specific PFAS ban, several national restrictions ensure alignment with international conventions. Japan has implemented strict controls on defined PFAS under the Chemical Substances Control Law. These developments reflect a global shift toward stricter PFAS control and greater regulatory harmonization.

Supporting the shift away from PFAS

We have expanded our range of services in response to this sustainability shift. With expert support and advanced analytical methods capable of detecting over 600 PFAS, our solutions provide original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and suppliers with the confidence to support their regulatory compliance efforts in a fast‑changing legislative landscape.

Automotive Solutions

Our comprehensive range of PFAS services for automotives includes:

  • Analytical testing
  • Chemical management
  • Supply chain audits

‘No PFAS Detected’

The voluntary SGS ‘No PFAS Detected’ green mark demonstrates your commitment to product safety and environmental responsibility. It provides independently verified evidence supporting alignment with evolving global PFAS restrictions and rising market expectations, enabling product differentiation, strengthening brand trust and reducing regulatory risk. Independent verification is conducted against recognized frameworks, including ISO 17065, ISO 17029, ISO 14065 and ISO 14021, ensuring full transparency and robust compliance.

The ‘No PFAS Detected’ green mark gives buyers and partners clear, credible assurance in a rapidly changing regulatory landscape.

IMPACT NOW for sustainability

Our sustainability impact services support the automotive industry in meeting environmental goals and regulatory demands. Through the IMPACT Now for sustainability initiative, we offer targeted solutions, including PFAS testing, under four key pillars: climate, circularity, nature and environmental, social and governance assurance.
