PrimeSafe was established on 1 July 2003 under the Seafood Safety Act 2003 and the Meat Industry Act 1993 and broadens the scope of food safety regulation of the former Victorian Meat Authority.
The PrimeSafe standard provides a framework for the production of safe and wholesome meat, poultry, seafood, pet meat and pet food. It requires food businesses to adopt and implement quality assurance programs for their food processing facilities. PrimeSafe ensures compliance with Australian standards for food safety through a licensing and inspection system with outcomes based on:

To obtain a PrimeSafe licence to operate, you will need to:
- Ensure that your facility complies with relevant PrimeSafe construction requirements
- Sign an agreement with a PrimeSafe approved third party conformity assessment body
- Submit a licence application together with the applicable fee
