Health and Safety Representative Training Course

Health and Safety Representative training course from SGS – understand the role and function of an HSR under Work Health and Safety (WHS) legislation.

This training course will provide you with the knowledge and skills you need to fulfil your role as a Health and Safety Representatives (HSR). It will help you to understand your role and function and how WHS legislation will influence health and safety outcomes in your workplace.

What will you learn?

On completion of this training course, you will:

  • Understand WHS legislation
  • Understand how this legislation applies to the roles of elected HSR and deputy HSRs
  • Have the knowledge and skills necessary to use the additional powers of an HSR under WHS legislation to issue Provisional Improvement Notices and direct unsafe work to cease

Course Outline

Day 1

  • Overview of the WHS legislative framework
  • Duties of various parties and key terminology
  • The role of SafeWork NSW and penalties for noncompliance

Day 2

  • Requirements for consultations on health and safety issues in the workplace and the mechanisms available
  • The role of HSRs, Health and Safety Committees (HSCs) and other available mechanisms
  • Entitlements and protections

Day 3

  • Approaches for resolving workplace health and safety issues through negotiation and conflict resolution and the skills HSRs can utilise to achieve successful outcomes
  • Identification of hazards and ways in which they can be eliminated or minimised

Day 4

  • Practical exercise on Day 3 learning outcomes
  • Incident notification and investigation

Day 5

  • Issuing of Provisional Improvement Notices (PINs)
  • Procedure for directing unsafe work to cease where negotiation and issue resolution has been unsuccessful or immediate action is required
  • Summary, review and discussion of course learning outcomes

Prerequisites

You must have the language, literacy and numeracy skills needed to:

  • Communicate with others in a clear and concise manner
  • Read and comply with work instructions and specifications

Who should take this course?

This course is designed for all elected HSRs under the WHS Act who have requested approved training to gain an understanding of the management of work health and safety under the WHS legislation and their role and entitlements as HSRs.

Delivery methodology: face to face

Certification

Upon successful completion of the course requirements, a Certificate of Completion will be issued for the Health and Safety Representative Training Course - Five Day.

Recertification

HSRs in NSW are entitled to attend an approved one day refresher course each year during their term of office (as per section 21 of the Work Health and Safety Regulation 2017).
