SGS collaborates with Safespear to deliver certified Oil Country Tubular Goods (OCTG) Drill Stem Inspector training to Aboriginal personnel.
Safespear, a 100% Aboriginal-owned specialist safety services company, engaged SGS to partner on delivering their contract with INPEX in the Browse Basin.
As part of the collaboration, SGS delivered Drill Stem Inspection training to Aboriginal personnel.
This course combined field training and classroom theory, introducing trainees to the processes for on-site inspections. Experienced SGS inspectors are providing ongoing training and support to Safespear’s personnel involved with the inspection of drill pipe coming in from the Rig offshore WA, currently contracted by INPEX. The collaboration ensures the drill stem inspections are delivered to the highest standard.
Barry McGuire, Chairman of Safespear, said: “Safespear is committed to the training and employment of Aboriginal people in all of areas of operations. Collaborating with a company of SGS’s standing means that we can provide world-class support and training for our Broome-based inspection team.
“In our experience of delivering this program of work with SGS, we have seen that the company has a genuine commitment to reconciliation and true partnership with an Aboriginal-owned business. This commitment goes beyond their reconciliation action plan and is in fact at the very heart of what they do”.
Bronte Gale, General Manager of Industries, SGS Australia, said: “As a company committed to reconciliation, aligning with a 100% Aboriginal-owned company is reflective of our values of diversity and inclusion. Our reconciliation action plan looks to build relationships, respect and opportunity between ourselves and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with continued learning of First Nation’s culture and traditions.
“The opportunity to collaborate with Safespear and support delivery of INPEX’s drilling equipment inspection needs in the Browse Basin aligns with our commitment to building relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organizations as part of our reconciliation action plan.
“The training provided to Safespear personnel has been such a success that we are now exploring the expansion of this model with other companies and environments.”
Building a collaborative working relationship based on knowledge sharing and trust is a unique opportunity in this sector that both SGS and Safespear are excited to see develop and thrive. For SGS, collaborating with Safespear to deliver the scope of the INPEX contract is the beginning of a sustainable and long-term affiliation to provide tailored solutions to the oil and gas sector.
Josh Morris-Luck, Lead Drilling Quality Advisor at INPEX is pleased to support this important capacity building initiative.
“At INPEX, we strive to deliver positive social and economic outcomes for communities we work alongside. This includes our commitment to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. We’re excited to be part of this collaboration and its continued success,” Josh said.
