Did you know that 1,600,000 people get sick due to unsafe food every day, on average?
On 7 June, the world comes together to celebrate World Food Safety Day, a global initiative led by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations. This annual event aims to raise awareness and promote action on the importance of food safety to ensure the health and well being of individuals and communities worldwide.
With an ever increasing global food supply chain and increasingly complex production processes, ensuring food safety has become more important than ever. Food safety is everyone’s business, no matter who they are or what they do.
According to WHO, foodborne diseases affect 1 in 10 people worldwide each year. Food standards help to protect people from such diseases. Foodborne illnesses pose significant health risks, and addressing food safety issues requires a comprehensive approach involving all stakeholders, from producers to consumers.
What are food standards?
Food standards are a way of ensuring safety and quality. They help businesses implement guidelines and codes of practice along the food supply chain to ensure that food is safe and nutritious when it reaches the consumer. When food safety standards are applied, consumers are protected by the efforts that have been undertaken to make sure that the food they consume is safe.
As a food business, you are responsible for ensuring the food you produce and/or sell is safe.
How does your business benefits from implementing food standards?
Food standards enable you to:
- Demonstrate commitment to food safety and quality
- Improve process management by helping to identify and manage risk
- Prepare for existing and new food safety and regulatory requirements
- Improve product quality, and reduce recalls and withdrawals
- Increase profits and access new markets
- Protect your brand and reduce customer complaints
