Calculating the Value of SGS Sustainability Services
GRI Content: G4-EN7, G4-PR5
Sustainable Development Goals: Goal 7, Goal 8, Goal 13
Over the last three years, we have been conducting studies to examine the value of our services in helping our customers to become more sustainable. Working with our external advisor, the first study examined how customers in our Industrial Manufacturing and Agriculture and Food business lines were reducing their carbon intensity. The study estimated that through our Pipeline Integrity and Precision Farming services in 2015, we helped our customers to reduce their CO2 emissions by 17%. During 2016, we began the process of conducting further studies on our services, this time linked to directional drilling services (based on a case study of a horizontal drilling project in Colombia), ISO 50001 certification in the commercial and industrials sectors, and social responsibility audit services.
(See Measuring Our Value to Society for more details on how we are measuring our sustainability performance using financial metrics.)
Other SGS services that directly contribute to CO2 emissions reductions for our clients relate to energy efficiency in buildings. These include renewable energy feasibility studies, energy audits, energy performance certificates and ISO 50001 certification. In addition, Search SGS provides a range of specialist advisory services and engineering expertise on sustainable buildings. We also provide cradle-to-cradle product certifications for companies committed to the development of a circular economy.
We expect demand for such services to increase given increased regulatory obligations on companies and the expectations being placed on them by society to help develop products and services that contribute to sustainable development.
