Why This is Important to SGS

GRI Content: G4-DMA

From our materiality matrix, you can see that water, effluents and waste are not currently seen as ‘material’ to the company. Our stakeholder feedback reflects the fact that, as a services company, we have relatively low consumption of water and we produce limited waste from our network of laboratories. However, some of our operations are in regions that are water-stressed and where sanitation is poor. We also recognize that the local environmental impacts of any water shortages, effluent or waste mismanagement, and the associated remediation costs and reputational damage, could be high. These issues are important in a wider sustainability context, coming to even greater prominence in the future as the potential impacts of climate change and other factors on air, soil and water quality become apparent. Hence we have included an overview of our management of water, effluents and waste in our 2015 reporting, as we believe they may have a greater impact on us in the future.
