2013 has seen an increase in the number of more serious incidents. We are deeply saddened that six male and one female employee, and three male contractors, lost their lives in work-related incidents. These incidents occurred across the following regions: Africa, China and Hong Kong, Northern and Central Europe, South East Asia Pacific, South America, Eastern Europe & Middle East, and Southern Central Europe. None of these incidents occurred on SGS sites. The majority were traffic accidents. In response to the number of serious traffic accidents in the early part of 2013, we immediately launched a road and travel safety campaign. These incidents highlight to us the importance of continually reinforcing the Rules for Life and safety culture within SGS.

    Although our four-year data reveals a downward trend, the TRIR increased by 1.7% in 2013 to 1.19. We are deeply saddened that this included 10* employee and contractor fatalities, which mainly related to road accidents. In response, we immediately launched a global driver safety awareness campaign and reviewed our site risk assessment processes

  • Our Commitments

    • Conduct our second global Safety Day in 2014
    • Roll-out OIMS to the remainder of South America, plus Hong Kong, East Asia, and North America in 2014, and complete full global roll-out in 2015
    • Ensure the quality of data collected through Crystal and make greater use of data analysis to identify trends in 2014
    • Put in practice the OI tools and associated skills in 2014, such as the risk assessment methodology, incident investigation methodology and industrial hygiene training, to H&S professionals, and further field coaching sessions for senior management
    • Roll-out Global PPE Management Program in 2014 to standardize PPE, ensuring appropriate quality and type of PPE is used
    • Continual reinforcement of the SGS Rules for Life
