2017 was a landmark year for SGS Nigeria as it celebrated 60 years of providing independent inspection, testing and certification services within Africa’s most populous country.

SGS Nigeria decided to mark this special occasion by establishing a partnership with a local community organization, aiming to connect SGS employees with a cause that they could directly support through fundraising and volunteering.

During the 2016 festive season, SGS Nigeria’s Managing Director and the company’s Country Human Resources Manager reflected on the plight of orphaned children. They organized a raffle among employees and raised almost CHF 680 (250,000 Nigerian Naira) for the Living Fountain Orphanage, located close to SGS Nigeria’s offices in Lagos. Established in 2007, the Living Fountain Orphanage provides food, shelter, emotional support and opportunities to some of the least privileged children in Nigerian society.

According to UNICEF, there are an estimated 8.6 million orphaned children in Nigeria and 930,000 of these are orphaned through AIDS. While it is customary in Nigeria for extended family and community members to care for orphans and vulnerable children, the capacity and resources of families and households have been over-extended. With more than half the population of Nigeria living in appalling conditions, families are typically torn apart by urbanization, unemployment and serious health problems, leaving many children abandoned, excluded from society and vulnerable to trafficking and sexual assault.

SGS Nigeria decided to mark its landmark year by extending its support of the Living Fountain Orphanage. On July 5, 2017, SGS Nigeria’s sixtieth anniversary, 12 employees visited the Living Fountain Orphanage to present a fundraising check and to spend time with the children.

In the next phase of the partnership, SGS Nigeria plans to support the orphanage’s vital work and keep smiles on the faces of its inspiring children with regular visits, volunteering and fundraising.
