The rapid growth in the use of electrical and electronic devices around the world is causing a huge increase in the amount of e-waste produced globally.

Electronic waste

Every day, thousands of tonnes of e-waste are exported to countries that may lack the knowledge and infrastructure to deal with this waste and its effects on health and the environment. Burning, breaking up or consigning e-waste to landfills causes substances such as lead, cadmium and mercury to be released, presenting a risk to human health and the environment.

SGS has created RenovoTM, a self-funding, full-scale waste management system that covers the entire chain from production through recovery, recycling and sustainable disposable. Our service covers three distinct processes:

  1. Physical inspection at the country of origin ensures that countries do not become a dumping ground for hazardous waste products. We check that exporters are not fraudulently shipping waste products to a country and we ensure that any waste items comply with the rules and regulations of the Basel Convention.
  2. We help countries to create revenue from the Advanced Recycling Tax (ART), which is based on the ”extended producer responsibility” and “polluters pay” principles and follows equipment to the end of its life. If a country does not have an official waste management program, SGS can support the process of implementing legislation to facilitate the collection of ART.
  3. SGS assists countries in developing and running a modern, effective waste processing facility using the revenues derived from ART, focusing on the recovery of useful items and the reduction of the amount of hazardous materials sent to landfill.

Through this unique end-to-end system, SGS RenovoTM aims to drastically reduce the amount of toxic materials released into the environment while stimulating economic growth and increasing awareness of environmental and recycling issues.
