SGS Canada Coordinates Recycling Efforts Across Multiple Facilities in Lakefield
SGS Canada’s Lakefield site in Ontario houses two minerals laboratories and one environmental laboratory.
Around 370 SGS employees work at the site. The Lakefield Sustainability Committee was developed in 2015 following feedback from the Group-wide employee survey Catalyst, which revealed that many SGS employees felt that sustainability was a priority but were not sure what the term meant for them.
One of the first initiatives of the cross-functional Sustainability Committee was to review procedures for plastics recycling across the site. The committee found that many of the plastic consumables, such as bins, pails and containers, that were being recycled every year could be reused elsewhere on the site. By standardizing its approach to waste management, the Lakefield site has been able to promote the reuse of consumables – from plastic containers to stationery and office products – across the site, reducing the quantity of plastic sent for recycling and the volume of new consumables purchased.
