Earth Hour is a worldwide movement organized by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) to encourage individuals, communities, households and businesses to turn off their lights for one hour as a symbol of their commitment to the planet.

Push the botton sign

The movement is supported by various SGS affiliates every year. Some examples of our support during 2016 appear here:

At 8:30 pm on March 19, SGS Taiwan switched off all lights for one hour. At the same time, employees and their families witnessed the shutdown of all lights at the Taoyuan International Baseball Stadium after the opening of the games. Commenting on the experience, one employee said, “I am surprised and touched by seeing it… I could not only watch a ball game but respond to carbon reduction. I will change my way of using energy to avoid unnecessary waste…”

Earth Hour inspired SGS South Africa to switch off all non-essential lighting, air conditioning and electrical equipment for at least one hour. While this activity happened later in the year, due to the need to avoid disruption to services, the affiliate achieved a total savings of 131.2 KWh based on data monitored via electricity meters across four sites – Woodmead, Boksburg, Ferro Street and Randfontein.
