SGS is proud to have participated in the 21st Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP21).

Led by SGS France, the company worked in partnership with “Club Génération Responsable” to host an exhibition on climate solutions in the Grand Palais which was attended by 42,000 visitors. We also co-hosted a breakfast event, at which SGS awarded the first sustainable retailer label, “Labels Enseigne Responsable", and we engaged in numerous debates on climate topics with customers and other business delegates.

Following two weeks of intense negotiations and years of preparation, COP21 culminated in 195 participating countries reaching an historic agreement to:

  • Peak greenhouse gas emissions and achieve a balance between sources and sinks of greenhouse gases in the second half of this century
  • Keep global temperature increases “well below” 2oC and pursue efforts to limit it to 1.5oC
  • Review progress every five years
  • Make available US$100 billion a year of climate finance to developing countries by 2020, with further funding beyond this date

With participating countries yet to ratify the agreement (which will require 55 of the 195 participating countries, who must represent 55% of all global warming emissions, to commit to definitive action to reduce CO2 emissions), the international community will be looking to corporations and individuals to take concerted action to reduce direct and indirect climate impacts, and also deliver necessary solutions to tackle global warming.
