Getting promoted into your first formal leadership position is an exciting but challenging transition that is often underestimated by individuals and employers.

According to a study conducted by the Center for Creative Leadership in 2014, 20% of first-time managers are considered to be doing a poor job according to their subordinates, while 26% of first-time managers did not feel they were ready to lead others.

The SGS EML program was launched in September 2015 at the SGS headquarters in Geneva. Ten managers with responsibility for leading people are currently following the program and are scheduled to graduate in early 2016.

Over six months, participants will progress through six stages of development using various pedagogical approaches, from individual coaching, theoretical content, brainstorming and role play, with each stage being followed up with a personal action plan. As well as developing their leadership and communication skills, participants also had the opportunity to learn and practice HR and management disciplines, such as recruitment, engagement, performance management and compensation and benefits.
