What is the Gafta Sustainability Pledge?

The Gafta Sustainability Pledge was first announced as a pilot scheme back in 2019, in response to the United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It was established to raise awareness of sustainable business practices among both Gafta members and the wider industry. Specifically, the Pledge encourages the global agricultural trade industry to operate sustainably and protect environmental resources to secure the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

By joining the Gafta Sustainability Pledge, organizations can demonstrate their commitment to sustainable business practices – and can publicly use the Sustainability Pledge logo on their website and marketing materials to increase awareness. The Sustainability Pledge officially launched to all members on January 20, 2022.

Now, the Directory acts as a community where members can collaboratively share sustainability-related experiences and best practices with one another.

Why is it so important?

According to The IPCC's Special Report on Climate Change and Land (2019), the agricultural industry is directly responsible for up to 8.5% of all greenhouse gas emissions – while land use change (mainly deforestation to clear land for food production) accounts for another 14.5%.

To curb climate change, agricultural organizations must find ways to lower their emissions while still safeguarding the global food supply chain. This is no easy task. However, communities like the Gafta Sustainability Pledge Directory make it easier for companies to come together and tackle sustainability head-on. Members can share experiences, discuss best practices and take action to make the industry more sustainable.

Where SGS Comes In

SGS is committed to building a sustainable future, which is why we were early supporters of the pilot program. Now that the Sustainability Pledge has officially launched, we are delighted to say that over 100 of our labs, fumigation and inspection operations are included in Gafta's Sustainability Pledge Directory.

This means that we can use the Directory's logo throughout our operations to promote sustainability awareness. More importantly, our membership allows us to join forces with some of the agricultural industry's major players to build a more sustainable future, together.
