Japan – Revision of Designated Term for Textile Products under Household Goods Quality Labeling Act

SafeGuardSSoftlinesJanuary 31, 2022

The designated term “acrylic” under the Household Goods Quality Labeling Act (Appendix 6 of the Textile Regulations) has been revised to “modacrylic” for acrylic type fiber with a mass ratio of acrylonitrile of 85% or less. The enforcement date is January 1, 2022, with a transition period until December 31, 2022.

With the revision of Japanese Industrial Standards JIS L0204-2 “Textile Term (Raw Material Division) - Part 2: Chemical Fiber" in November 2020, an amendment to the composition label of the "Textile Product Quality Labeling Regulations" has been made. The amendment relates to the generic name for polyacrylonitrile synthetic fibers that are used in textile product labeling.

The designated term “acrylic (アクリル)” has been changed to “Modacrylic (モダクリル)” for a mass ratio of acrylonitrile of 85% or less. This was previously designated under “Others (アクリル系)” in the regulation. Therefore, from now on, polyacrylonitrile synthetic fiber with a mass ratio of acrylonitrile of 85% or more is classified as “acrylic (アクリル)”, and others are classified as “Modacrylic (モダクリル).”

The revision was approved and became effective on January 1, 2022, and a grace period will be provided until December 31, 2022. For inventories that are already in circulation in markets, it is not necessary to collect the products and change the label. Products containing the specified fiber pending distribution must be labeled with the new term on or after January 1, 2023.
