China’s new national product standard GB/T 39508-2020 is effective on June 1, 2021.

The Standardization Administration of China issued its national product standard GB/T 39508-2020 <Knitted Garments for Infants and Children>. Included in China’s No. 26 announcement on the approved national standards in 2020, this new national standard became effective on June 1, 2021.

Scope

This standard is applicable to knitted garments for infants and children which are made mainly from knitted fabrics.

Terms and Definitions

  • Knitted garments for infants
    knitted garments intended to be worn by infants less than or equal to 36 months of age.
    Note: knitted garments generally worn by infants less than or equal to 100 cm in height may be considered as knitted garments for infants.
  • Knitted garments for children
    knitted garments intended to be worn by children ages 3 years to 14 years.
    Note: knitted garments worn by girls more than 100 cm and less than or equal to 155 cm in height, or by boys more than 100 cm and less than or equal to 160 cm in height may be considered as knitted garments for children. Therefore, knitted garments worn by children less than or equal to 130 cm in height may be considered as garments for children under the age of 7 years.

Main technical contents

Requirements include internal quality and appearance quality.

  • Internal quality
    Includes fibre content, formaldehyde content, pH value, odour, decomposable carcinogenic aromatic amines, bursting strength, pilling, dimensional change after laundering, dimensional change after dry-cleaning, spirality after laundering, colourfastness to saliva, colourfastness to water, colour fastness to perspiration, colourfastness to laundering, colourfastness to rubbing, colourfastness to dry-cleaning, colourfastness to light, colourfastness to light with artificial perspiration, colourfastness to transfer in joints, water-vapour transmission rate, tensile strength for clothes' belts, extractable heavy metal content, total heavy metal contents, phthalates contents, flammability, attached components, filling material, appearance quality after laundering (dry-cleaning), residual metal needle, down-proof property of down garment.   • Appearance quality
    Includes appearance defects, dimension tolerance, dimension difference in symmetric positions, sewing requirements and raw materials. The detailed requirements can refer to clause 5.4 of this standard
