Canada Publishes New National Standard for Flammability and Labeling Requirements for Tents

SafeGuardSToys and Juvenile Products, HardgoodsJune 04, 2020

Canada’s General Standards Board (CGSB) has published the first edition of CAN/CGSB-182.1-2020 for flammability and labeling requirements for tents. Health Canada has provided information regarding the Tent Regulation.

In April 2020, the Canadian General Standards Board (CGSB) published a new Canadian national standard for Flammability and Labeling Requirements for Tents (CAN/CGSB-182.1-2020).

The standard was developed to update the flammability and labeling requirements for consumer tents with the objective of minimizing fire hazards and improving safety.

The standard applies to consumer tents for outdoor use (this includes tents intended for both indoor and outdoor use), for example camping tents, backpacking tents, suspended tents, teepees, children’s tents, tent trailers, ice-fishing tents, dining shelters, sun shelters and screen houses. The standard does not apply to consumer tents intended for indoor use only, tents that are not intended to shelter people, tents used for commercial purposes only or tents subject to the National Building Code of Canada.

The standard covers performance requirements and test methods to assess tent material flammability when tested as received, after leaching and after weathering. The standard also covers labeling requirements.

As per advice from Health Canada, at the present time, the existing requirements of Tent Regulation (SOR/2016-185) remains in effect and it is currently working on a proposal to amend existing requirements under the Tent Regulation with the requirements in CAN/CGSB-182.1. Amendments to the Toy Regulation (SOR/2011-17) would be required so that flammability requirements for toys that are play tents can be included in those regulations.

Compliance with CAN/CGSB-182.1 will be voluntary for tents until the Tent Regulation and Toy Regulation are amended.

The new standard CAN/CGSB-182.1-2020 can be viewed at http://publications.gc.ca/collections/collection_2020/ongc-cgsb/P29-182-001-2020-eng.pdf
