SGS is proud to announce it has been recognized as the first certification body in the world able to perform audits against the latest version of the FAMI-QS Code for the specialty feed ingredients sector. The starting date for the new version is April 1, 2019.

Originally based on European Union Feed Hygiene Regulation (183/2005/EC), the FAMI-QS Code has been developed to provide international validity for the specialty feed ingredients sector. It addresses safety, quality and regulatory compliance in order to minimize hazards, and ensures only safe and legal specialty feed ingredients are placed on the market.

Specialty feed ingredients are defined as any ingredient that is intentionally added to feed that would not normally be consumed on its own. These ingredients will affect the characteristics of the feed, animals, animal performance, or animal products, but may have no nutritional value. The sector therefore includes ingredients obtained via the following production processes:

  • Chemical
  • Bioprocessing
  • Mining
  • Extraction
  • Mixing
  • Formulations/preparations

FAMI-QS covers both production and trade within the specialty feed ingredient supply chain.

Operators must complete their migration from Version 5.1 to Version 6 by October 1, 2020, and stakeholders should note the FAMI-QS Secretariat will not accept applications under Version 5.1 after October 1, 2019.

SGS has over 140 years of experience operating in global agricultural markets and has been offering FAMI-QS certification services since 2010. From its ISO 17021-1 accredited facility in The Netherlands, SGS is the first certified body in the world to be accepted to perform FAMI-QS Code Version 6 audits.
