U.S. FTC Seeks Public Comment on Leather Guides
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is seeking public comment on whether it should repeal, amend, or retain the Guides for Select Leather and Imitation Leather Products (Leather Guides).
SAFEGUARDS | Softlines NO. 026/19
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) published the Leather Guides in 1996, providing instruction on the rules that govern labeling of leather and imitation leather products. The Leather Guides address misrepresentations about the composition and characteristics of certain leather and imitation leather products, and state that disclosure of non-leather content should be made for material which has the appearance of leather but is not genuine leather. The Leather Guides apply to the manufacture, promotion, and distribution of leather and imitation leather purses, luggage, wallets, footwear, and other similar products. The aim of the Leather Guides is to ensure that false information or deceptive practices are not being used to sell products, and to promote truthful, non-misleading advertising to consumers.
The FTC is seeking public comment on whether there is a continuing need for the Leather Guides, including whether deceptive or unfair advertising and marketing practices are used to sell leather and imitation leather products, and whether the Leather Guides should be expanded to cover products that are not currently included, such as automotive and furniture upholstery products.
Comments must be received by FTC via www.ftc.gov/policy/public-comments within 60 days from the date of the announcement on February 6, 2019.
