The new B11 standard for Registered Laboratories has been developed in response to several cases of inaccurate laboratory results for animal feed analysis. Incidents like this create confusion and stress among feed supply chain companies, undermining faith in the feed safety chain and ultimately endangering feed safety. Therefore, from July 1, 2019, laboratories offering critical contaminant analysis of animal feed to GMP+ FSA certified companies must be GMP+ registered. This can be achieved by gaining certification to the new B11 standard.
B11 defines performance standards for the analysis of four critical contaminants:
- Aflatoxin B1
- Dioxins/dioxin-like PCBs/ non-dioxin-like PCBs
- Heavy metals
The new standard was developed by GMP+ International in combination with a working group that included CBs and laboratories. SGS's Global Certification Feed & Non-GMO Manager, Erik Verweij, was chosen as one of the representatives of CBs. He described the process as particularly positive, with each group striving to engage industry during the final decision-making process. In addition, Erik detailed how pleased he was that the new standard created a level playing field amongst feed testing laboratories; improving standards and making it easier for stakeholders to be sure their laboratory is performing at the required level.
With the laboratory registration requirement less than a year away, SGS is pleased to add the B11 standard to its portfolio of GMP+ FC services. SGS has significant global experience in the delivery of feed certification services, making it the ideal choice for laboratories seeking to achieve certification to the new standard before next year's deadline.
