Vegetable Foods

Dear Reader,

Innovation is at the heart of this issue, as we embark upon 2018 and the food industry addresses challenges relating to food defense, food sustainability and certification. Join us as we explore some of the most topical stories.

Ensuring sustainability in farming is the main aim of the Sustainability Agriculture Initiative’s Farm Sustainability Assessment program. Learn more with our audit expertise.
A recent consumer study revealed that 50% of consumers worry that ingredients and contaminants in food products could pose a risk to their health, and more than 70% are prepared to pay more for food that has been independently tested. We look at the use of testing to allay fears and improve confidence.

On January 1, 2018, EU 2015/2283 the new novel foods regulation came into effect, bringing the region into line with countries, such as Canada, China, Australia and New Zealand. It opens the door to the EU for a whole range of products, including insects. We explore its potential impact on food producers.

In this issue we look at food defense from two perspectives. At March’s GFSI Global Food Safety Conference we hosted a ‘Special Session’ Large Scale Events: Defending the Food Supply Chain: Challenges and Strategies exploring the work of Japan’s Food Defense Committee. In addition, you can discover more about food defense in the context food fraud/crime in our white paper.

What is vegetarian or vegan food? SGS has developed a ‘For Vegetarian/Vegan Nutrition’ certification mark, which is available on a voluntary basis to companies. Learn more about our new service.

At the GFSI conference we also launched the Spring ’18 edition of SGS Digicomply, the easy-to-access, go-to platform for food professionals delivering compliance intelligence 24/7. Discover the new functionalities and user experiences.

And, continuing our series of lab services series, we visit the new acquired food testing labs in North Sioux City, Dakota and Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
