On the 12th of March, the European Commission released its 2017 RAPEX annual report. This year the report was presented at SGS CEBEC in Brussels by Vĕra Jourová, Commissioner for Justice, Consumers and Gender Equality in the presence of journalists.
The European Commission’s 2017 RAPEX Annual Report notes stabilization in the number of notifications and member state follow-up actions, showing the efficiency of the system. The challenge now is to ensure that products sold online also meet European safety requirements.
The European Commission has released the 2017 edition of its Rapid Alert System (RAPEX) Annual Report . RAPEX is the European information exchange system on dangerous products set up in 2003. Over the years it has shown a continuous increase in the number of alerts notifications, however it is now stabilizing with just over 2000 alerts per year and almost 4000 follow up actions from national authorities, including the withdrawal of products from their market
This shows that the system is now efficient, and that national market surveillance authorities across Europe closely monitor the alerts in the system and take relevant measures to ensure consumer safety.
The next step for the European Commission is to make sure that consumers are also protected from dangerous products sold online.
National authorities are therefore required to work on tools and to invest in resources to monitor online sales while the European Commission continues to communicate with web platforms to improve the safety of products sold online.
In the context of this global market, the report also emphasizes EU efforts to collaborate with China, USA, Canada and Japan on international recalls and global emerging risks.
In 2017, 2201 alerts were sent through the Rapid Alert System with 3952 follow-up actions.
Once again, ‘toys’ represent the largest group of products reported to RAPEX, followed by 'motor vehicles', and 'clothing, textiles and fashion items'.
Regarding the risks, the main risk notified in 2017 is ‘injuries’ before ‘chemical’ and ‘choking’.
